Services: Asbestos Abatement

What Asbestos Is
Asbestos is a naturally occurring fiber valued for applications such as insulation, fire retardation, and strength. Because of this, asbestos was (and in some cases, still is) included in many commonly encountered items, from ceiling tiles to brake pads. However, asbestos is a very dangerous health risks.

Health Risks
There are three dangers attributed to asbestos exposure. The first is asbestosis. Asbestosis is a result of scarred lung tissue. When inhaled, the asbestos fiber damages lung tissue, leaving scarred tissue in its wake. Enough scar tissue will cause troubles in normal respiratory functions. Asbestosis can have effects ranging from mild to severe.

Lung Cancer is the second disease directly related to asbestos exposure. Asbestos inhalation can result in malignant cancers of the throat and lungs, and combined with tobacco smoke, asbestos fosters the risk of cancer growth exponentially.

Mesothelioma is the third danger of asbestos inhalation. Due to fiberous and scar tissue buildup, a lubricating liquid the lungs secret naturally collects, cause discomfort, pain, and difficulty of breathing. Eventually lung functions are in jeopardy. Without proper treatment, this will result in death.

The most dangerous aspect of these diseases is their latency period. It often takes more than twenty years for symptoms to develop and diagnosis be made. Asbestos, therefore, must be prevented from becoming airborne and inhaled.

When is Asbestos Dangerous

Contained asbestos is not a problem. Floor tiles containing asbestos, for example, pose no threat until they are broken. It is then the fibers are released into the air for inhalation. Natural asbestos deposits exist, and fibers are released into the air, though not to dangerous levels unless they are disturbed and the fibers are aided into circulation.

Anytime a material containing asbestos is compromised, immediate action should be taken. Increased levels of asbestos in the air are dangerous for any person. Keep in mind that asbestos is a natural substance, and in the course of my life you will undoubtedly inhale some asbestos. Exposing oneself to concentrated levels of asbestos, however, is passive suicide.

In choosing an experienced professional to remove asbestos from your indoor environment, ask the following questions:
  • Will you contain contaminated areas? (See containment, negative air, air scrubbers)
  • To what extent will you ensure the complete removal of asbestos, not just compromised materials, but fibers in the air, too? (See negative air, air scrubbers)
  • Will you test to prove the initial danger and complete abatement?
  • What kind of experience do you have in this field?
